Deaf language, therefore, is playing a vital role in formation and support of deaf culture uniting deaf people in one community. Hearing people should not try to avoid deaf people and treat them as an isolated group.

Even with deaf parents and a native grasp of ASL the hearing person will have missed the familiarity of growing up deaf, including residential school. The hearing people are chit-chatting and enjoying their time. The deaf person is looking around trying to read lips but deep down is feeling isolated. Most Deaf people understand that they are equal to hearing people and should not feel discriminated against.
