Dignity nursing essays

According to Gallagher et al (2008), dignity is related to one’s identity as a person and is related to self respect and concepts such as integrity, autonomy and inclusion. Respect of rights, cultural and traditional values and patient’s needs or desires is the main concern of a nurse.

Dignity and respect in this essay are taken to mean the universal obligations of staff see the inherent value worth of individuals which should be given equally irrespective of patient’s characteristics (Adib-Hajbaghery and Aghajani, 2015).

As a healthcare professional the NMC (2018) insists that you must uphold a patient’s dignity and treat each patient as an individual. By being empathetic to a patient and treating them holistically, allows the nurse to perform quality care to that patient (Flanagan, 2013).

There are conditioning factors and attributes that have been put in place to govern dignity in care situations. One of the most important conditioning factors is for the nurse to gain a full understanding of the concept of promoting dignity in order to provide good nursing care to our adult patients.
