Marian drew essay

Drew was inspired to create the series after visiting a museum in Germany that exhibited paintings of dead animals. When she returned to Australia and was surrounded by roadkill, she was immediately reminded of the paintings and began working on the series.

Marian Drews was an emotionally unstable bank-teller who practiced self-harm before she met the Joker. Jack Napier, AKA the Joker, had just been left by Harley Quinn after she was horrified at Joker's torture and possible murder of Batman's Robin, Jason Todd.

Other dualities are referred to: natural and artificial, contemporary and historic, life and death, and light and dark. Early work of Drew’s explored the human-centric view of animals as disposable commodities – symbols of wealth to be enjoyed and controlled.

Influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch still lifes, Drew arranged tableaux of native animal road kill lying on starched white tablecloths alongside fruit, vegetables and utensils. She photographed them in the dark, then stroked the scene with light as if her torch was a paintbrush.
